SharePoint service account names

For many people working in the business for a long time, like me, it is well known that Pre windows 2000 accounts can not exceed 20 characters. I just thought lets blog about this one time because at the past two customers I installed MOSS farms with I asked the system admins to make to service accounts for me like moss_svc_search.

Sometimes these system admins want to add some characters to the name to fit the account name in their naming convention, like sa_xxxx_moss_svc_search. In this way the account is 22 characters and it is no longer possible to put that account somewhere in SharePoint to start a service with DOMAIN\account.

This is just a reminder.
