MarC, thanks for the reference. I just wanted to point out that I have found an even better way of doing the User Roles concept (without code or xml) by using another of the methods from the UserProfileService. The link you gave to my previous post still works, but it is not currently published on the site. It will be updated soon with the new method. I will keep the old method just in case, but the new method will have a new name and URL. If you follow my updates vis RSS, you will see this. If not, I will likely see a future reference from your site and remember to update you (assuming you check these comments).
