Today I did some consultancy work at a customer site. They had renamed the title site column at the root level in the item content type. They were complaining that it appeared everywhere on all sites and in all lists. I changed the name with a tool called SharePoint Manager 2007. See screenshots below.

Open SPM2007, go to the Site Collection and search for Fields.

Here you have to search for the name the site column is renamed to. Change the Title attribute. see below.
